Hi Stephen
I thought about that too but my concern is that a movie will elicit a range of emotions other than the basic emotion of positive or negative affect. For example, many movies that make you feel happy or sad also temporarily influence emotions such as hope, disgust, fear, excitement, sorrow, longing, etc. Are there films that just elicit a positive (or negative) mood without other emotions? I have not read the reference you provide so perhaps they address my concern.

As thanks have already been given, I may be a bit late with this, but
I'll give it a shot anyway. Another technique for manipulating mood
which has been used with some success is to show the participants
film clips which evoke a particular emotion. It seems to me that the
method has at least pretty good face validity, as we all know how
manipulative films can be in jerking our emotions around. I tend to
avoid modern horror, but I certainly remember the effect Psycho and
Night of the Living Dead had in scaring the pants off me. And who
didn't suppress at least one sniffle as Leonardo froze to death in
the cold cruel Atlantic while Celine's voice swelled in the
background? Sniff.

Anyway, a reference to this technique is:

Gross, J., & Levenson, R. (1995). Emotion elicitation using films.
