If the mother of your friend had multiple personalities, I am thinking that your friend might want to hold on to those papers in case someone lodges a malpractice suit against the therapist who most likely created the alters through suggestion.
DID (no one calls it MPD anymore) is slowly revealing itself to be a product of suggestion (therapist's eagerness) and cultural factors (the numbers swelled after the movie Sybil) than a biologically based mental illness. It's more akin to Koro...or alien abuctions than Bipolar Disoder or Autism.
