I agree that students take short cuts with greater ease.  But, have not
students done so for millenia?  Did you ever use someone else's ideas
without appropriate citation?  Did you not use the notes in the margin of
a book that someone used?  

I do agree that students (and individuals, in general) are becoming
greater and greater "cognitive misers" [to use that term more broadly]. 
Is this a function of technology?  Yeah, probably.  I, myself, am
astounded at how few phone numbers I have memorized anymore now that I
have a cell phone and Palm Pilot.  I hardly ever look things up in a
dictionary but use whatever comes up on the web and then determine if it's
accurate.  I never calculate grades by hand, Excel does it.

In order to combat student cognitive miserliness, they have to understand
the value of using journals that are not available full text.
