Siegel, S., & Allan, L. (1985). Overshadowing and blocking of the
orientation-contingent color aftereffect: Evidence for a conditioning
mechanism. Learning & Motivation, 16, 125-138.

>From the abstract:

Contingent aftereffects were induced by exposing 120 Ss (aged 17-19
yrs) with normal color vision to compound chromatic grid patterns
consisting of 2 component gratings: one was horizontal or vertical,
and the other a left- or right-leaning diagonal. Results show that the
ability of a component grating to elicit a color aftereffect depended
on the relative salience and the aftereffect training history of the
grating components.
