My main gripe about APA style is that, in my (limited) experience, the
copy editor insisted on my keeping rigidly within the rules, when a
sensible use of discretion would be in order. I have in mind particularly
the referencing of translations of Freuds works, when the normal format
ceases to be appropriate. What the reader needs to know in this case is
the date of publication of the *original* (German language) book or paper.
Not only is the date of the English language translation of little
interest, it is actually misleading because the Hogarth Standard Edition
volumes were not published in chronological order (they seem to have
published the translations according to which works were likely to be of
most interest), so the translation dates are meaningless, e.g.:

Freud, S. (1953c). Three essays on the theory of sexuality. In The
Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud
(Vol. 7, pp. 130-243; J. Strachey, Ed. and Trans., in collaboration with
Anna Freud, assisted by A. Strachey and A. Tyson). London: Hogarth.
(Original work published 1905.)

How much more sensible to reference the Three Essays as follows:

Freud, S. (1905). Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality. In Standard
Edition, Vol. 7, pp. 130-243.

My normal procedure is to state first the translation publication details
of the *complete* Standard Edition, and then list the works I have cited
giving original dates, followed by the volume number. Not only is this the
most useful way of referencing the works from the point of view of
recognition and checking, it is far less space-consuming than the APA
style, in which the full editor, translator and publisher details are
repeated for every reference.

(Even if the APA referencing is given as Freud, S. (1953c/1905), it
still means that the works are listed in an order which is meaningless.
There also remains the absurdity of the repetition of identical full
details for each entry.)

Incidentally, in the case of the two British journals in which I have
published articles (History of Psychiatryand History of the Human
Sciences), the copy editors have been happy to allow me to reference
Freuds works in the format I submitted.

To make my point clear, I have appended below the format as submitted in
one article, and the format that the copy editor insisted on.
