...which leads to an annoying construction that frequently appears in
published papers, e.g.: "We measured levels of dopamine to determine
whether _this neurotransmitter_ would..." (emphasis added).  What on
earth is that?  Certainly no one _speaks_ that way.  If you need to
inform the reader that dopamine is a neurotransmitter, try: "We
measured levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine to determine whether
it would..."
