Hi: I think this first started out as a thread on how
to make students read the textbook material. After 35
years of teaching HS Psychology and another 4 yrs. of
teaching it at a small University, I think I have
found the system that works. You make a study guide
of questions for each chapter you intend to go over
during the course. Hand the study guide out and
announce that on the next meeting of the class you
will circulate around the room checking to see if
everybody filled out the studyguide. If they did you
stamp their papers with a rubber stamp(smily face). If
they didn't do it they get a "nice try"stamp. You
then review the chapter studyguide. Using this
system, it is important to indicate to the students
that all test questions on exams covering the text
material will be drawn from the studyguides. When you
give a test on a chapter or several you collect all of
the students studyguides, so as to give them a grade
for "written work". Those students who have a smily
on their chapter studyguide get full credit(100%).
Those who recievied the "nice try" stamp can get 75%
credit if they took notes during class and filled in
the studyguide. Is this Skinnerian? Yes, and it
works. Gerry Palmer,
