Subject: teen sexuality

Perhaps I've just gotten bored with the whole topic of teen sexuality, or
maybe I'm just getting cranky in my old "over 50" age, but when I teach this
now here's my whole lecture on teen sex:

"Adults father two out of three births to 15-year-old girls"

and

"Men older than 20 father half the births to minors in California, hardly a
matter of 'children having children.'"

"Sixty percent of 14-year-old girls labeled 'sexually active' report they
were raped or forced to have sex. Teen mothers are more likely to have
suffered sexual abuse as children than teens who do not give birth."

All of the above are felonies. What shall we do about that?

Then I let the students take over the discussion. The above information is
from The California Wellness Foundation Teenage Pregnancy Prevention
Initiative, 6320 Canoga Ave., Suite 1700, Woodland Hills, CA 91367

This is one of the best little booklets I've seen about teen pregnancy.
That's the best I can do with the publication info.

Mike Males also addresses these issues in his book The Scapegoat Generation
(also the best info I have - sorry).

Other issue addressed in the booklet - Does teen pregnancy cause poverty or
does poverty cause teen pregnancy? and a few other issues. I give small
groups each one of the issues to address and that's my class on teen
pregnancy.

Makes me a little cranky that we blame the minors for the misbehaving
adults. Yes I realize the young woman is the one who ends up with the baby
and so perhaps we should focus on empowering her, but..........what about
the felons?

I would have come out of lurking sooner, but I'm usually too busy picking
myself up off the floor laughing after I read this digest. "You people" are
fun! Never mind the fact that I learn a lot and get help staying up to
date! So perhaps a little introduction? I am a semi-retired marriage and
family therapist, teaching family studies courses at Cal State (family
communication, family and social issues, family stress - all with an
ethnicity component) and Sexuality in the Psych Dept at American River
College (a community college in Sacramento).
