I've taught human sexuality for many years, and one of the best references is from the National Health and Social Life Survey (NHSLS) (Laumann, Gagnon, et al., 1994). According to their survey of Americans aged 18-59, 60% of men and 40% of women had masturbated in the previous 12 months. About 25% of the males and 10 percent of the females responded that they masturbated once a week or more. 85% of men and 45% of women living with a sexual partner reported masturbating during the previous year.
