My preferred term for "tendency of like to MATE with
like" is "positive assortative mating."
If, however, you want a term for "tendency of like
to MARRY with like," then "homogamy" would seem quite appropriate.
The Greek stem words refer to "sameness" and "marriage," as you note.
In my experience, in the social sciences, "homogamy" does refer to marriage, but
this term is used by botanists too, and plants don't marry. Given recent
events in San Francisco and a few other locales, "homogamy" might be a
politically sensitive term these days.
