Thanks for all the words of wisdom (including the James' poem!). I going with homophily. I'm putting the finishing touches on a false consensus paper (people overestimate the % of their traits in the population - e.g. smokers overestimate the % of people in the population who, like them, smoke). In some experiments, I had participants list their friends' behaviors. It turns out that consensus estimates are predicted better by their _friends'_ behavior than their own, and in describing this phase of the research I discussed the degree of "homophily" between the behavior of the participants and that of their friends.
