Hi Michael,
As another tipster has mentioned, you can have only obsessions or only
compulsions. I have been told that only compulsions are a more common
presentation in childhood, but I have not seen research on the topic.
Obsessions only people have often been a hard group to treat (more difficult
than those who also have compulsions). A local researcher, S.J. Rachman
(affiliated with the University of British Columbia and Vancouver Hospital),
has developed a treatment protocol for Primary Obsessionals that he is
available as a text, Treatment of Obsessions. He also has a number of other
books on obsessions and OCD, which I find very readable. In addition, his
cognitive theory of obsessions is discussed in a number of articles (some
are published in Behaviour Research and Therapy).
Cheers.
Martha
