My mistake.
There's nothing online at CSICOP related
to searting blood.
I still think that I saw a mention in a
Skeptical Inquirer article, 'tho.
Got me intrigued enough to do a Web
search (Dr. Sylvester could have
invested five minutes of his own
time).
Enter "hematidrosis" in a MedLine
search.
I dont know about
sweating blood, but the alleged stigmata presented by certain individuals
over the centuries (e.g., St. Francis of Assisi, Padre Pio, Theresa Neumann,
etc.) has been countered by a possible alternative explanation known as
psychogenic purpura, where severe emotional trauma is said to be followed by
bleeding (similar, in some ways, to conversion disorders). As for a
reference, try Whites Weird Science (1999), published by Avon
Books.
