I tend to agree with a less radical, more circumspect approach to this. I
think we have a problem walking the fine line between protecting and
infantilizing the students in constructing these policies. I am not sure what
right the institution has to monitor and forbid such relationships, if at all. I
remember being told at a CSU-Fullerton adjunct faculty orientation that we
should not look around for potential dates among our fellow faculty -
in any department - (not the students, but the faculty) - a suggestion to which
I immediately had an MYOB reaction. I figure that if such a situation arises in
the nexus of my personal and professional life, as an adult I should be trusted
to make decisions about how to handle it. Although the student/employee -
faculty "dangerous liaison" is somewhat different, it has some of the same
dimensions also.
