In the manner of brief personal reminiscences occasionally added at the end of some Obituaries in the UK, I would like to add the following pretentious memoir to the obituary in the LA Times cited by Stephen: I cannot claim to have met John Maynard Smith in person, but was in the audience on two occasions when he attended meetings of the Darwin Seminars at London School of Economics in recent years. On one occasion he was in the audience, and asked a question from the floor in the discussion after the platform speakers had finished the first part of the meeting. Although by then a frail figure whose voice was none too strong, he immediately commanded attention, both by his bearing and by the astuteness of the comments he made (and by the obvious high regard in which he was held by the main speakers). On the second occasion he was one of the platform speakers, and spoke without notes in a conversational manner that held the audience spellbound. Truly a remarkable man and a remarkable scientist.
