So thanks to Rick Froman and Paul Smith, we now know that:

1) People wearing orthopedic shoes do not have to remove their shoes 
for visual inspection

2) Others are not routinely required to remove their shoes for visual 
inspection

Next question: Why is this practice not a security risk?
