TIPSters,

In an attempt to further this discussion, let me respond to some of the
comments:

Rick Stevens stated:

"I kind of thought that anyone could subscribe, it's a mechanical
process"

This is accurate and has always been this way - TIPS is an open list
and people come and go as they wish.

Michael Scoles asked:

Wasn't TIPS mirrored on a usenet newsgroup in the past? Has this
changed?

Not that I know of but it has been archived in the past on the site in
question www.mail-archive.com and this was discussed when we used the
old software when there was a serious risk of losing the archives.
Thus, TIPS archives from 1999 are on this site if you search closely.

I thought this disappeared once the TIPS address changed and honestly I
am surprised it is still being archived at this site particularly since
I do not find them listed as a subscriber to TIPS so I am not sure how
the messages are being forwarded there but I am investigating this
one. Unfortunately, the person in charge of the listservers on our
campus is away for training until a week from Monday so it may not be
resolved till then unless I get the answer from the people at the site.

Rick Adams stated:

"We realize that anything we say _could_ be accessible to a student,
administrator, or other individual who chose to access the list
archives"

An accurate statement and I would add based on personal experience,
anything you share could end up anywhere since anyone who subscribes to
TIPS is "listening" to your comments and may decide to share them with
others without your knowledge - this has happened to me on several well-
documented instances!

Rick Froman stated:

"I agree that I would never post anything to a discussion list that I
didn't want published to the entire world".

I couldn't agree more for the reasons stated previously - once you
share it with a group of people you have lost control of where it may
end up.

Rick Adams stated:

"If there are not, then the list needs to use a listserver such as
majordomo or listserv that DOES have such listings instead."

Since this software costs money and the university makes decisions on
what software to use for all of its lists, I have no control over this
issue and quite frankly limited input - bottom line, I have to use
whatever is made available.

Enough for now - but one question? Why do these complicated issues
always come up when I am out of town (just returned from a few days of
helping my oldest move into his college) and extremely busy (our
classes start tomorrow and I am not ready ;) ?

Later,

Bill
