Hi Chuck & others-
It seems to depend on the specific needs of the members of the department!  Without knowing those needs, I'd say flexibility and a mix of multi-size, multi-use rooms would be best.   Your idea of 5 testing rooms with a larger room sounds good.

To give you a flavor of the variety of needs out there, when I (cognitive psychologist) came to Drew I requested 3-4 small testing cubicles (just enough rooms for a computer, 2 chairs and some paperwork) with 1 large common room for work, meetings, presentations, etc.  Our most recent hire (social psychologist) needed 1 larger testing room for 2-4 to comfortably interact with a smaller control/observation room adjacent to it, in addition to a couple testing cubicles.  Another (clinical psychologist) needed 1 large room for students to work on computers with space to conduct interviews.

Hope this helps
Patrick

Subject: Setting up a Psych Lab

Colleagues,

A week or so ago I posted a question to the list asking that if you had a 28 x 28 room that could be developed into a Lab, what would you do?  I am inclined to set up 5 individual data-collection rooms (with computers) and perhaps a counseling room with video, etc.

To date, I have received one replyget BIOPAC.  I truly expected more responses and if you are feeling generous with your time or thoughts, I would appreciated any additional ideas you might want to contribute.  We already have a 24 station computer lab for teaching Methods and Stats (with SPSS).  Thank you in advance.

Chuck
