Rule stated re Herman Grid (White's Illusion, no.14):
"white tends to look darker when it is surrounded by black"

Rule stated re "a contrast illusion" (no. 4):
"We tend to see white as whiter next to black"

Are these not contradictory?

How reliable are the "explanations" given for visual (and other) illusion
phenomena? How far are they educated (we assume) guesses presented as understanding?
