My understanding from a decision made by the Attorney General of Virginia a number of years ago is that a student in college can and should) be considered an adult in all transactions. It may have changed since 1995, but I haven't heard that it has.

I am doing research with a student. All of our participants are Intro Psych students. We require all students who are under 18 to get permission from a parent/guardian as well as signing a permission slip themsleves. We posted parent permission slips on the same bulletin board as the sign-up sheets. When we ran one session, we asked if anyone had parent permission slips and no one turned one in. After collecting all of the data, we scanned the papers and noticed that one student said her age (we have no names attached) was 17 years, 11 months. Since we already have her data but we do not have a permission slip from her parent/guardian, are we obligated to discard her data.

We are just curious as to the collective wisdom of this group.
