Hello all. The past 3 weeks have been quite a trial. Our campus was hit fairly severely, with something like 2,000 trees down. Most buildings sustained damage of some type, although the psychology building (which is only a few years old) emerged unscathed. A few buildings will be off-line for a year. In spite of the massive tree loss, we are still a wooded campus. It will not look the same, but in a year I expect we will have regained much of our beautiful "park-like" appearance.
Classes resume tomorrow. Although the university extended the term by 2 weeks, I am still trying to figure out how to make the appropriate adjustments to my syllabus. I can barely recall what I was talking about in class before the storm hit. I'm sure it will be almost like starting over for my students. Personally, I have spent the past 3 weeks cleaning tree debris from my yard and working to get 2 very large 100 year old trees off of my roof. I have a few holes in my roof and some water damage from rain incursion, but my losses are small compared to that of some of my colleagues, who experienced total destruction of their homes. I have been thinking of Myer's theory of the relative nature of happiness. For one week I was a happy woman because I had running water and a gas hot water heater, so that even in the face 10 days without power, I had a hot shower at night. And I discovered that my land line began working again today! oh, joy! maybe my cable internet will resume soon.
