Though it isn't precisely what you're looking for, I recommend _Freethinkers : A History of American Secularism_, by Susan Jacoby. Starting in colonial times, it chronicles tensions among groups of Americans with differing types and degrees of religious belief, including fundamentalists.
I also second Sue's recommendation for Reay Tannahill's book _Sex in History_.
Catholic author but I am trying to verify it. My guess is Tertullian (sp?) and it goes: "woman is a temple built over a sewer."
