Yes, we did check the scatterplot and it is a pretty good
(heteroescadistic?) example of a negative correlation.

This is so basic and so trivial, that I'm pretty sure you have already
ruled this out. However, for sake of making a useless suggestion, has
your student checked for unreasonable outliers or illegal values? (e.g.,
"99" for a missing value).
