FYI This week's issue of U.S. News & World Report [Volume 4, Issue 47 -- December 13, 2004] looks at the issue of prayer.
U.S. News teamed up with Beliefnet, the leading multifaith Internet site on religion, to create an online survey about how these prayers are focused. As far as the survey goes, Marianne Szegedy-Maszak reports "...social science researchers would not view this survey as being statistically valid but the more than 5,600 responses that it received nonetheless reveal a rich and often colorful anecdotal peek into the wildly varied reasons people say that they pray." So, while not satisfying anyone's demands for precise methodology, it might (as the author suggests) nonetheless be worthwhile to examine the myriad reasons and experiences people give for praying.
