Hi Y'all,

I'm sure many of you are worried about friends, family, students, or colleagues who for one reason or another may have in Asia during the horrible events that are continuing to unfold over the past two days. Others, I'm sure are just concerned and saddened by the events and the humanitarian crisis as a result of the earthquake and tsunami. And of course, all of our thoughts are with those Tipsters in the region.

For those who would like to help, the International Red Cross is seeking funds to assist with their relief efforts. Individuals can contribute on-line by going to:

https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp

and selecting International Response Fund.

Additionally for those in the U.S., you may want to consider faxing/writing Colin Powell, Pres. Bush, etc. to thank them for their initial pledge of $15 million in relief aid (see excerpt from news report below) and urge them to increase the amount of funding considering the extent of the tragedy. While I might consider $15 million to be a large amount of money if it were sitting in my bank account, it is a small drop in the bucket and a figure compared to other U.S. expenditures. And I'm not sure how I would respond as a country such as Sri Lanka in response to a to a U.S. $100,000 contribution towards relief efforts.

Best,

Linda

"Secretary of State Colin Powell at a news conference with USAID Assistant Administrator Ed Fox, said $100,000 was given to each of India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, and the United States was contributing $4 million to the International Red Cross. "Not only have we responded both in terms of the short run with $400,000 to the various embassies and also a large commitment to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent, but it's anticipated that we'll add -- at least immediately -- another probably $10 million for a total of about $15 million in our initial response to this tragedy," Fox said."
