Although of trivial importance right now, it is also the case that many
hundreds of thousands of books were destroyed by the tsunami. Over the
course of the next year academics might organize to send extra copies of
texts and journals to colleagues in the affected areas. All of us have
offices full of journals that duplicate those in our libraries, and
examination copies of books, so the resources are available to us. Once
the recipients are identified (and I have no idea how to do this), the
greatest cost of this endeavor will be the cost of transporting the
heavy materials. This alone might make the whole idea impractical -
maybe instead we could urge those in a position to do so to provide
cheap (free?) electronic access to academic materials.
And of course we should all take immediate action to urge our government
to increase its relief efforts, and we should give what we can to our
preferred relief agency.
Just some thoughts. I'm not a tipster, so if this does not go to the
entire list, I would appreciate it if it were forwarded.

Hi Y'all,
The human tragedy continues to unfold and the risks due to disease, lack
of clean water, lack of access to food/shelter are ever increasing.
Below is a list from the New York Times of relief agencies accepting
donations. I have also pasted contact information for U.S. government
officials below. The U.S. has promised another $20 million in support
but it looks like these monies are being cast as loans. If you think
the U.S. should increase its relief efforts and funding, you may want to
fax (the fastest and most likely means to have your message read and
counted) Colin Powell, George Bush, etc.
Also, here is a link to a listing of pharmaceutical company Web sites -
http://www.pharmacy.org/company.html. Most have contact information.
Certainly, massive amounts of antibiotics and medicines are going to be
needed and you may want to encourage their participation in the relief
efforts.
Please feel free to forward this information.
