I had a conversation with a law student about this a few weeks ago. She told me that when one student is the target of Socratic questioning, the others bombard that students with cruel IMs - "Wake up, stupid", "You really bombed this one!", etc. She also said that there were a few students who didn't participate: she referred to them as "the geeks".

This strikes me as excellent preparation for participation in today's society.

In subsequent conversations after this, I learned that
technology is completely changing legal education. Professors can't
keep one student on the spot for any period of time or his/her fellow
students will begin to IM the answers! So, some are discontinuing
Socratic questioning, or moving between students more. Others aren't
allowing laptops in the classroom.
