I had a student bypass our "Learning Centre" (which is in charge of determining disabilities and accommodations) and come to me directly. He told me he had a rare spinal disease, and that he would be in a wheel chair within 5 years. I felt terrible, and gave him some leeway (without asking for proof, of course, thinking, "how could someone make this kind of stuff up?") As it turns out, he was found to havelied to many instructors, cheated on papers and exams, and was put on probation. He did not come back for a year, and I now see him around, still smiling as if nothing had hapened.

Studying psychopathy these last weeks, it truly makes me wonder... One thing I know for sure, from now on, I will definitely bypass my compassion and ask for medical support of any such claims! And I'll be certain to direct them to the Learning Centre!

Cheers!

JM

"B" I'd hate to have the responsibility as a teacher to make this decision. I don't want to have to discriminate between bonafide disabilities and student manipulation to avoid difficult requirements.

Just a quick survey question and I'll be happy for as many back-channel answers as I can get.

At your college/university, when a student has a disability for which they need accommodation, is this determination made by

a) individual instructors
b) a centralized unit (such as disabled student services)
c) either, depending on the student's preference
