Jim raises an interesting point regarding faculty evaluations. I served
on a teaching evaluation committee that recommended that written
comments (as opposed to 5-point scaled replies) be returned to the
faculty member for feedback, but not go to chairs, deans, etc.,
precisely because the responses are polarized and not representative of
class sentiments. And, although our provost was very supportive in
implementing other committee recommendations, he disagreed with this
point. If anyone is interested, our recommendations are available at:

I was unaware until yesterday that there is a site called
www.ratemyprofessor.com

Has anyone ever perused this?

My guess it is probably polarized -- those who loved your
class or despised it might be most likely to register an
opinion.
