Caveat: I'm just going to assume, for the moment, that this is a list of people interested in issues surrounding college-teaching generally, and that it just so happens that we all teach psychology. If you have a more narrowly-defined understanding of the TIPS mission, you probably won't be interested in the message below.

If you thought Ward Churchill was an isolated incident which we could quietly ignore because he didn't really deserve our support, check out the first FOUR stories here. He was just the thin edge of  the wedge (surprise!). And (following up an earlier thread) be sure to check out Graham Larkin's column on David Horowitz and his Academic Bill of Rites. (Warning -- a word of Anglo-Saxon derivation is used repeatedly).

FREEDOM TO TEACH:

--At Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, an award-winning history professor's optional handout leads his colleagues to denounce him and his dean to tell his TA's they can quit. Many students and professors see a witch-hunt in the making:

--At Hope College, a professor quits after a president objects to his commentary criticizing some leaders of the Christian right and standing up for SpongeBob SquarePants:

--At George Mason University, a prominent education researcher won't have his contract renewed as an adjunct. His criticisms of Republican education policies led Checker Finn to demand his exclusion from a campus lecture -- and the university agreed:

--At Princeton University, debates over the Middle East lead to charges and counter-charges over a potential hire and a junior professor up for tenure:

SOLIDARITY: Students at Washington U. in St. Louis end a 19-day sit in after the university agrees to provide more money for janitors and other workers. But the students give in on some of their demands:
