Well, it's a valid question..... Given that all students word process their papers now, actually I do take off for spelling when it's obvious that they didn't even use spell-check. I also take off if there is a strong pattern that they spell-checked but carelessly so, so that incorrect words are correctly inserted in the paper--i.e., as spell check went along making suggestions they just accepted the changes, regardless of whether or not they were prompted for the proper word.
AND I take off for grammar if it's an obvious mistake that grammar-checking would if. In other words, I take off==just a point or two, if I don't see any effort to make the assignment as good as it can be. So, I may not grade for effort for attendance (recent psychteach thread) but I do for spelling/grammar.
