Self-assessment isn't the only issue in terms of student awareness of certain
weaknesses. I can't generalize to all students, but when I was in school I was
repeatedly told about my poor spelling and typing skills. I am still
disgraphic. I can read without any problems, but I transpose and omit letters.
I was the first person in my class to get a typewriter with spell-check. This
does not solve all problems, but even now I use spell-check religiously.
I correct student errors when I see them, but I do not deduct points unless it
is excessive. In many classes, mechanics are 15% of my rubric, so they could
misspell every word and get a B. I think this is fair in the context of my
classes.
It seems likely students were told of their weaknesses in this area, whether or
not they are able assess them on their own. I agree that in a formal paper
anything underlined in red by the spell-check program should have been
corrected before the student turns it in, but that doesn't always solve the
problem. I never take it as a sign of disrespect, because I know I have made
errors even though I wanted to please my own teachers.

I wonder how true this is. No data in hand, but I just spent some time
reading the newest issue of Psychological Science in the Public
Interest, a fascinating article titled "Flawed Self-Assessment:
Implications for Health, Education and the Workplace". The gist of it
was that we are bad self-assessors with respect to a wide range of skills.
