Why expect so much from a name chang? Keep your sights more realistic. The
name change does communicate and may help--it may provide opportunities to
educate. That's something we should not trivialize. The problems of
educating colleagues and the general public will remain, and are larger,
ongoing battles. Gary

I think this is relevant to the thread regarding whether we should change our
name to "Department of Psychological Science." One of my colleagues in
Anthropology sent an email to the faculty listserve asking what department she
should send a student to if the student is interested in parapsychology. She
mentioned in the email that she was surprised to find out that no one in the
psych department did research in that area. I emailed her privately and said
that we are interested in parapsychology, but only as an example of a
pseudoscience. My chair (who is a smart aleck) sent a message to the list,
asking if anyone studies paraanthropology or parabiology (pointing out that
maybe intelligent design might be considered parabiology). Another colleague
from my department suggested that she look in the departments of astrology or
alchemy. I guess my point is, even a colleague in anthropology was surprised to
find that we don't do parapsychology, which leads me to agree with Jeff that
trying to clear up misconceptions may be a futile effort, one that a name
change won't facilitate.
