Well, here I am wasting my second posting of the day. Well put, Robin!
If self-selection it be, then I will seek out information on how to nominate
myself and forever more be known for my "luxuriant" (although not so much now
that I am getting older) hair! I have a great picture from when I was about 22
and it was waist long, albeit sort of thin even then, maybe I'll submit that
one--after all, it is "me"!

Using the male standard even I could be a member! I
saw my own rather thinning
but slightly longer than the back of the neck length
on many of the men's
pictures--well it wasnOb't exactly *MY* hair, but it
could have passed for mine.
The women's pictures, however, all showed hair well
below shoulder length! I

Object away! But the differential reflects a
self-selection bias, not any discriminatory criteria
on our part. I expect men feel that their hair is
luxuriantly flowing when it is only shoulder length
(look at Pinker, after all), whereas women aren't
sufficiently satisfied until it is much longer.
