Aw, Jim. "Dismissed" is too harsh. I seriously considered your suggestion but 
decided that it was unlikely in my case, although your experience suggests that 
it may be more likely than I thought (if you can follow that!). I did try two 
different browsers--Firefox and Internet Explorer, and had a problem with both. 
 Anyway, despite my neighbour apparently not having a problem with the same 
provider, I called them last night. They told me they did have a problem and 
were working on it. 

Sure enough, this morning all was ok, including and especially Google. It 
caused problems for me for three days, and I wasted time and effort trying to 
solve it. Nice of my provider to let me know that they were having difficulties 
(not!).
