He really said it.

Along these lines here's a question I posted to PSYTeach that I never got an answer regarding what is the distinction between psychological methods of interrogation and torture. I know that the APA has gotten on record saying it doesn't condone torture, but I'm still in the dark as to what constitutes "psychological" interrogation methods. Does anyone in here know what the psychological methods perfected by the Israelis  are?--Tom

I heard Senator McCain recently argue that we didn't need to use torture to interrogate prisoners and that even the Israelis no longer use torture but instead now use "psychological" interrogation methods, which we should also use. What exactly are the "psychological" methods employed by the Mossad? Is the distinction between torture and psychological interrogation a minor semantic relabeling similar to the way the White house sought to operationally define torture so that it must involve the intent to inflict harm equivalent to the pain of organ failure or death?

Does it merely mean no physical marks are left? What is it? Would using muzzled German Shepherds (growling and leaping) on blindfolded prisoners, who are not aware the dogs are muzzled, be an example of psychological interrogation? Are they suggesting this is nothing more than the situation of Milgram's participants who thought they were shocking the confederate? Where does the APA stand on the role of psychologists participating in the interrogation of detainees?

Thanks In Advance, Tom
