On another email list that I'm on, a person posted an Associated Press news story about research on a "Trauma Pill" that will "wipe out" traumatic memories. The article can be read at:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060114/ap_on_he_me/trauma_pill Even though a number of reputable researchers are involved (e.g., Joe LeDoux) I find the entire enterprise toubling. My first concern is whether memories associated with PTSD can really be eliminated and, if so, what are the long-term consequences of doing so. I was under the impression that there were fairly effective techniques for treating PTSD, so it's not clear why eliminating traumatic memories, outside for those who don't respond to any treatment, would be desirable. IMHO, it seems more reasonable to be able to access and reflect on the memory but with a reduced emotional response (which seems to be the goal of current psychotherapies). I'm curious about peoples opinions about this. -Mike Palij New York University [EMAIL PROTECTED] --- You are currently subscribed to tips as: archive@jab.org To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
