On another email list that I'm on, a person posted
an Associated Press news story about research on
a "Trauma Pill" that will "wipe out" traumatic memories.

Even though a number of reputable researchers are
involved (e.g., Joe LeDoux) I find the entire enterprise
toubling.  My first concern is whether memories 
associated with PTSD can really be eliminated and, 
if so, what are the long-term consequences of  doing so.  
I was under the impression that there were 
fairly effective techniques for treating PTSD, so it's
not clear why eliminating traumatic memories, outside
for those who don't respond to any treatment, would
be desirable.  IMHO, it seems more reasonable to
be able to access and reflect on the memory but with
a reduced emotional response (which seems to be the
goal of current psychotherapies).  I'm curious about
peoples opinions about this.
