On 5 Feb 2006 at 17:26, Mamma Roux (aka Jodi Gabert) asked:

Actually, Stephen Harper (our new Prime Minister) drinks Liberal blood. But
that's another story.

I was puzzled by this question so I turned to everyone's favourite resource,
the Web.

What Jodi is referring to is a satirical ad of Rick Mercer, a Canadian
comedian. Rick is best known in Canada for making Americans looks silly (no
easy task!) by carrying out interviews with them in which they agree, for
example, that our Prime Minister is (was) "Jean Poutine".

Anyway, the real ad was a doozy, in which the Liberals claimed (to the sound of
an ominous drumbeat):

"Stephen Harper actually announced he wants to increase military presence in
our cities. Canadian cities. Soldiers with guns. In our cities. In Canada. We
did not make this up."

Even though it never ran except for being briefly displayed on a website, it
made the Liberals a laughing-stock (no easy task!) and invited parody. You can
hear it on NPR at the url below, although the interview with Mercer is now out-
of-date, as all that he said would happen came to pass.
