As an incorrigible Judith Rich Harris enthusiast, and for further
thought-provocation in the
classroom, I suggest that Lareau's views be contrasted with those of JRH. In
her just-
published book, No Two Alike, she argues that in addition to genes, three
factors are
significant in making children grow up to be individuals, and child-rearing is
not one of them.
The self-same New York Times which recommends Lareau's work also recommends
JRH's,
without even a nod to the contradiction this implies. You can get to the NY
Times book review
by going to the No Two Alike website at http://home.att.net/~xchar/n2a/n2a.htm
and then
scrolling down to the link to the review by William Saletan.
