TIPSters have undoubtedly seen the news reports that a British woman is preggers at age 63 and due to give birth in two months (thanks to fertility treatment, naturally--or not so naturally) But have you noticed that some reports say the expectant senior citizen, Patricia Rashbrook, is a child psychiatrist, others that she's a child psychologist?
For example: Psychiatrist: BBC News, England The Age, Australia Calgary Sun, Canada Irish Independent, Ireland Seattle Times, USA EITB24, Spain Pravda, Russia Kashar World News, Pakistan ABC News, USA (caption under photo) Psychologist: The Scotsman, Scotland Sydney Morning Herald, Australia China Daily, China The Telegraph, England ANSA, Italy Jamaica Gleaner, Jamaica MedIndia, India ABC News, USA (story) Yes, that's right. ABC News called her both a child psychologist and a child psychiatrist. A Google news advanced search requiring all the search terms "Patricia Rashbrook psychologist" produced 296 hits; with psychiatrist, 256 hits, showing a modest preference for designating her a psychologist [using both terms produced unreliable results]. So who's right? A Google search turned up a website which lists her as Dr. Patricia Rashbrook, MBChB, MRCPsych. That "MRCPsych", I believe, translates as "Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists" and she is, therefore, a child psychiatrist, not a psychologist. What does this tell us? One, that many journalists don't know the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist (and how many of the rest of us do, eh?). Two, that there's nothing on TV tonight.
