An interesting twist on this thread (that even involves Pavlov) is the story of who first accurately reported the role of the corpus callosum (it wasn't Meyers & Sperry and apparently they knew it).
Check out: Kanne, S. M. and Finger, S. (1999). Konstantin M. Bykov and the discovery of the role of the corpus callosum. Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences, 54, 572-590. >From the abstract: Konstantin Mischaelovich Bykov, a Russian physiologist, studied the functions of the corpus callosum in the 1920s. He severed the corpus callosum in dogs and then used Ivan Pavlov's classical conditioning methods to assess the effects of his surgeries. His experiments showed the importance of the corpus callosum for interhemispheric communication well before the more famous publications of Ronald Myers and Roger Sperry began to appear in the 1950s. Bykov, however, received little recognition for his achievements outside the Soviet Union, where a host of factors (including Sperry's decision not to cite him in his own publications) seemed to conspire against him. The present paper describes Bykov, examines his research on the corpus callosum, and takes a look at the way in which his discovery was treated by his counterparts in the West. This also looks related: Finger, S., & Kanne, S. (1999). The discovery and rediscovery of the role of the corpus callosum. Brain Research Bulletin, 50, 419-420 Patrick -- Patrick O. It is about time we begin to appreciate our discovers.God save us from another European like Bettelheim(sp).
