Way way back there was an article about the search for an engram(the
supposedly spot in the brain for memory) and Lashley began removing
brain matter from rats,his discovery was that it was the amount of
removed material that was critical to learning and not any designated
area. Was Lashley the first to discover that principle? Apparently
not.
The Africans had knowledge of that through a process called
trephining.
They were able to assess brain function long before Lashley and
Penfield.
