I agree: I use it to distribute homework assignments and readings and
it saves our department and the students a LOT of wasted paper.
Students can upload a document and I can read it and comment either on
the document using microsoft word (although you can use just about any
word processing system but our university is standardized to word) or
you have a box in which you can write seemingly infinite feedback
comments, and then just post a grade. So there is never paper that
trades hands. Also, I like to email my students extensively and this
is a nice forum that limits all the chatter to my class.
I put all my powerpoints up on webct and students can bring a laptop
to class, open the file and save it to their laptop and then freely
add notes to the slides rather than writing the old-fashioned way; I
think they listen better when they have less to write and most people
type faster than they can write legibly.
They are upgrading webCT this summer to version 6 that will make some
aspects easier to use but I think I liked it just fine.

I use Blackboard all the time. It is very easy and intuitive to use. I
do not use the grading options or the blog/list option. I mostly use it
to post material and reminders. Although the same could be accomplished
by setting up a webpage it is much easier to use Blackboard. Also
because it is password protected (not out on the web for the whole
world to see) I put copies of readings and other materials that only
the students should have access to. In fact, I distribute a lot of
material only via Blackboard (such as the syllabus, handouts, and
articles) which saves on the depts photocopying cost (students can
print for free so really you are just shifting the burden of
printing/copying to another dept.).

I'm looking at using the web as a tool for my courses, and was wondering if
any of you have something to say about either Blackboard or WebCT. I am not
very familiar with either.
I've used WebCT and a couple of lesser known knockoffs that our
system has adopted.
It all you want is a site to post course related materials they're
overkill; just set up a Web site.
If you need online testing, grade recording and tht sort of thing,
then they can be useful. I'm not sure that there's much to choose
from between the various products -- as soon as one of them comes
up with a new gimmick the rest of them copy it.
