Hi Tipsters: Excuse the cross-posting with PsychTeach (of course, you will see it here first :)

The University of San Diego is hosting this year's meeting of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, Pacific Division (AAAS-PD). In cooperation with AAAS-PD we will be hosting a 1-day pre-conference Teaching Enhancement Workshop on Saturday, June 17, 2006.

The theme for the workshop will be "Scientific Literacy and Critical Thinking Across the Curriculum". All sessions will be of a hands-on, workshop type format. And, all presentations will be geared towards teachers across diverse subjects and levels of teaching from high school through university.

Psychology will be strongly represented with Diane Halpern giving the opening presentation on "Teaching General Thinking and Scientific Literacy Skills Across a Wide Variety of Subjects and Contexts that Generalize Across Domains and Last into the Future". Other psychologists who will be presenting workshops include Karen Huffman ("Why Study (Or Teach) Psychology?", Jerry Rudmann and Anne Ewing ("A [EMAIL PROTECTED]/PsiBeta Teaching Tips Exchange"), and Patricia Kowalski and myself ("Use of Refutational Text and Lecture for Promomting Conceptual Change and Dispelling Misconceptions Across Disciplines").

Other presenters represent the disciplines of Biology ("Using Student Led Discussions of Scientific Articles"), Mathematics ("Secrets of Platonic Solids: The Ancient Greeks Knew Them and We Can, Too!") and Physics ("Back of the Envelope"). The closing presentation will be by Sandy Buczynski from USD's School of Leaders and Educational Sciences ("Using Children's Literature to Develop Critical Thinking Skills").

Because AAAS-PD is co-sponsoring the event all registration is through their website, at http://www.sou.edu/aaaspd/sandiego2006/Workshop.html. Click on 'Preregister'. The fee is a modest $30 for anyone teaching at a 4-year institution and $20 for K-14. There will be registration at the door.

If anyone wants additional information they can contact me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks

Annette
