I was noticed that Dr. Phil is one of the invited speakers for the APA convention in August. It struck me as an interesting contrast with the types of speakers at APS.
For example, Malcolm Gladwell, who is not a psychologist, gave a very interesting and largely science-based talk at APS. Dr. Phil does identify as a psychologist, but I would be surprised if his APA presentation turns out to be science-based. I admit that I have not read any of his books and have only watched brief parts of his show, so maybe I am not being fair to him.
Does this strike others as representative of the differences between APS and APA? Is there a reason for concern with either type of speaker? I suppose my own bias is obvious, but I wonder how other feel about the types of speakers invited by these two organizations.
