Good questions

I think for some people, being religious can make you depressed

And for some people, being depressed can cause that person to seek
religion
as a potential resource for elevating one's mood and well-being

Ultimately I think the gist of the study does seem to show that for your
mental health one must believe in the road you are traveling on
