Greetings,
This topic is not exactly teaching related, but I thought members on this
list might be able to give me their opinion on a dilemma that I am facing. I
sit, as President, on the board of a relatively large association here in town.
There are roughly 30 employees and a budget of about 2.5 million$. Here’s
my dilemma: The Executive Director
(ED) is a wonderful person who has contributed to the development of the
association for the past 20 years, occupying various function until becoming ED
5-6 years ago. In the last two years, this person has become more and more
tired. We have taken on many large projects, and have expanded the scope of the
organization. We went from about 6 employees in 2000 to over 30 now. My feeling is that we are
soon going to be ready for a change of director, and the ED also feels that it
would be a good thing, feeling very tired. As such, the individual in question
has told me that the position would be left open if he/she finds another job. Until
a new job has been secured, this person will not commit to leaving his/her
current position, nor officially confirm that he/she is actually actively
looking for a new position. It has to be understood that the job gets done, and
well. But the time seems ripe for a change of management style. Many employees
seem to be uneasy with the present style. Just so you know, we use
the Carver Board model. So my question to you is
this: What would be an appropriate plan of action for me and the board? So far
the board is not even aware of this situation, as the ED has only shared it
with me. Oh, and there is another
thing… The ED and I have found a wonderful person to take over the
position next year. But that potential replacement would need to know ahead of
time, as he/she lives outside of the territory. So I feel I may end up missing
on a wonderful opportunity to recruit a new and dynamic leader… If you’ve had
experience on boards and feel like sharing your thoughts on this, please do so,
either back-channel or on the list! Thanks a lot! Jean-Marc To make changes to your subscription go to: http://acsun.frostburg.edu/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=tips&text_mode=0&lang=english |
