I'm not sure you can compare how Cruise "downplays" the physiological contribution to depression with how Beck "downplays" it. Cruise has commented on how the physiological contribution is completely false. He says he has "read the research" although my suspicion is he has not and has only read Scientology's synopsis of the research. Has Beck come out and said he believes there's little or no physiological contribution to depression? I would love to see this. I've had similar discussions with clinical colleagues who believe that Beck ignores experience. However, Beck has acknowledged how childhood learning, for example, contributes to our cognitions. He just doesn't focus on this aspect in therapy.
In reality, cognitive and physiological contributions to depression are not mutually exclusive. In fact, there's quite a bit of evidence about how these can interact. I hope we teach our students that it's not either or! Dean Amadio --- To make changes to your subscription go to: http://acsun.frostburg.edu/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=tips&text_mode=0&lang=english
