As a department you should probably discuss if it is desirable to have multiple recruitment strategies or whether you want them all to go though the subject pool. Perhaps multiple reward structures is confusing to students (maybe not) or perhaps there are already too few studies for the subject pool. But these are practical rather than ethical matters. From an ethical perspective, I think this situation is no different from any other recruitment situation. As with all recruitment there needs to be non-coercive measures in place (not offering too much if an reward), assurances of the voluntariness, anonymity or confidentiality of responses, etc. etc. I know that folks differ on how "fragile" students are in the recruitment situation. If you guys already have a subject pool you have obviously decided that it can be worthwhile and ethical for students to participate in research projects (including those run by the professor of the students' intro class). Whatever ethical safeguards you have in place for the subject pool could easily be applied to the individual recruitment case.

I am curious how tips folks would react to the following situation. We have a typical subject pool available from our introductory psych course. However, a faculty member wants to recruit only current students in classes taught by that faculty member. The reasons for this procedure remain ambiguous.

My view is that this seems akin to a "dual relationship" situation and should be avoided. But I am unclear whether this would be an actual violation of ethical guidelines such that an IRB would not approve the procedure.

What do you think?
