Sorry! :) I knew what you meant! I just couldn't (well, didn't) stop myself. 
But, in fact, I do agree with you. I think they learn far better from doing or 
using what they read. I think a few readers do engage their texts without 
having to take those extra steps but I'd be first to agree with you that most 
of our students do not have that skill- and especially if we ask them to go 
beyond a textbook. They learn to engage the text through our examples. (BTW- I 
have to admit that this was difficult for me to learn as a young teacher as I'd 
always engaged with the text- at least as long as I can remember. But it was a 
kind colleague who called me on that and pointed out that I didn't just 
automatically do that, that I'd been lucky and had a good teacher somewhere 
along the line!).
